Unlike many massive multiplayer online games offered, Guild Wars does not feature a monthly subscription fee. The game, once bought from a retailer, is free to play online without the need to pay any sort of fee.

Some may wonder how a company could survive without a subscription fee, this is in part due to 2 reasons: 1) Those behind the network code are exceptional (creators of battle.net) and have been able to render their game very bandwidth efficient and 2) They plan on releasing new chapters (expansions) every 6 months in order to have a steady flow of revenue. Don’t worry though, you will not need to buy these expansions; but if you want to get access to the new content (which we have been told should be rather extensive for each update) the chapter will need to be purchased. That said, if you wish to skip one chapter and only buy another, that is fine too.
